Main Public Space of Limassol (Platia Iroon)

Architecture Competition, awarded proposal

The proposal organizes the square area on a ‘smart’ floor that functions as a network of infrastructure for social and ecological processes. It builds simultaneously on the complex collective memory of space since 1900, on existing uses of the square but also on practices to address aspects of climate change, where the rainy season shrinks but the intensity of heavy rainfall increases with frequent floods. The proposal, titled “Square of Everyday Heroes”, rephrases the ways in which a public space highlights hidden practices of daily life in Limassol. It enriches the square’s existing landmarks, which are the Heroes Monument with its lamps, the outdoor entrance to Rialto theater and the kiosks with their micro-environments. It proposes simultaneous structures for collective management of the square and the wider area.
